Ankeny Writing Friends: If you missed last Saturday, September 17, you missed another fine morning of reading, instruction, and Q/A with poet, ISU creative writing instructor, and memoirist Debra Marquart As motioned, I am particularly enamored with Marquart’s award winning memoir (reviewed in NYT) “The Horizontal World” – because my mother was born in North Dakota (many, many years before Marquart, of course), which is the setting of writer’s memoir. My mother left ND, hence I am. I very much recommend you “catch up” with our learning from Saturday. Do it by watching Marquart’s presentation/reading at Aquinas College a couple years ago. On You Tube. Marquart suggested we use things we see, like family pictures (hers at left) as inspiration for writing. We looked at paragraphs of Steinbeck’s Cannery Row as a way of working our ways into a piece of writing.
